Cornell Teachers Awarded Grants

Congratulations to Mrs. Rachel McVeagh, Ms. Sarah Sleasman, and Mrs. Miriam Klein being awarded AIU3 OnRamp Grants. Mrs. McVeagh’s grant will provide teachers with prizes for completing digital choice boards. Ms. Sleasman’s grant will give access to Spanish language texts for students in her Spanish Classes. Mrs. Klein’s grant will be used to encourage students in grades 3 through 8 to “unplug” from computers and to read and explore hands-on activities. For more details, click on the link above.

Teacher Choice Boards: Teachers at Cornell School District have demonstrated incredible growth and eagerness to learn this year. To build on this momentum, each teacher will receive a digital choice board loaded with a range of professional growth activities, which will focus on promoting joy and student creativity in the classroom.  As teachers further grow their skill set by voluntarily completing these meaningful activities, their work will be acknowledged with prizes, which will support their work in the classroom.

Spanish Language Books: The grant will cover the cost of purchasing a subscription to a website called Flangoo which will give students access to a wide variety of leveled readers in Spanish so that we can do more extensive reading in my classes. Extensive reading is reading for fun and to improve fluency, so students will read books of their choice at a level that promotes comprehension and allows them to grow their vocabulary and reading speed.

Unplug & Read: Students in grades 3-8 have the opportunity to receive kits from the library that allow them to "unplug" from their computers and explore different hands-on activities. Each grade will be themed to one of 4 topics: Avatar Academy, Production Studio, Spy School, or Writers Workshop and paired with library resources for further exploration. Kits will contain an activity book for the program, any resources needed to complete the activities, a parental direction page, and a list of extension resources or activities. Students who complete the kit can bring their finished activity book to the library to be recognized.
